Midnight Blue: a smash hit for Burwood Tennis Club
Rod Armstrong, owner of Prestige Sport Surfaces, has a relationship with Burwood Park Tennis Club that stretches back for over a decade, so he was thrilled when they recently asked him to undertake a complete overhaul – consisting of three turf replacements and a full repaint of four hard courts – of their popular public courts in Cresswell Avenue.
The club committee chose to go with a bold Midnight Blue centre surrounded by US Open Green for their colour scheme. These are the only public courts in Christchurch that feature this particular combination, and we think you’ll agree that the result is quite striking.
Taking into account the high volume of tennis that gets played there from week to week, Burwood Tennis Club’s hard courts won’t need repainting for at least 7-10 years, and they will get a good 15 years of use from their turf courts before wear and tear starts to make them slippery. Colin is also pretty impressed with the lack of ponding and the ease of drainage on the new surfaces.
The membership of Burwood Park Tennis Club grew considerably once their facilities had been upgraded, and these days they are even able to offer the turf courts to kids’ soccer teams over the winter, so it’s a win-win for everyone.
Anyone who has ever played on a turf court will know how slippery they can be, so the sand on the synthetic turfs at Burwood was a particularly grippy variety that was brought down from the North Island. Vice President Colin Finnie was impressed with the amount of grip this gravelly type of sand afforded him when he was playing down in Wanaka and thought it would be a good idea if Burwood followed suit. “Our club has a lot of older members who don’t enjoy slipping and sliding” he says. “This sand variety is so grippy that you almost can’t slide on it, and it means that people are really happy to play on that surface.”
When asked why the club chose Prestige Sport Surfaces over other companies, Colin leads with the fact that our quote was incredibly competitive, but of course, you have to back up a good quote with good service.
“Rod gave us a level of confidence and assurance that the job would be done properly, and he really does do quality work. He has absolutely delivered and we’re really happy with the work he’s done. I have no hesitation in recommending him to other clubs.”
Colin also adds that Rod is always happy to sponsor the tennis club in turn, and most importantly, “You can always get hold of him!”
Of course, we are not limited to hard court painting and turf courts. Here at Prestige Sport Surfaces we also lay cushion surfaces, which are a great way to get clients ‘of a certain vintage’ out onto hard courts.
We are also regularly getting asked to paint multiple-use lines for both basketball and Pickleball. Pickleball in particular, is becoming so popular that Richmond Tennis Club in Nelson, we are about to take out two tennis courts, replacing them with their smaller Pickleball counterparts, and we suspect other courts around the country will soon be following suit.
We don’t care whether the ball in question is soft and yellow or perforated plastic, we are just proud to be part of the growing participation in racket sports in New Zealand.
