Kinda like tennis merged with ping pong on a badminton-sized court, pickleball is the sport that’s taking the world by storm. And we’re up for it! In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s time you joined the cool kids (think George Clooney, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian) and became a pickler too!
Easy to learn, super social and cross-generational, this is a game for the whole family. Seriously, how many other sports can 78-year-old Nana and her 13-year-old grandson take on a doubles pairing of hip young things and win?! But that’s exactly what pickleball allows you to do.
Created in the US in 1965, even the origin of the silly-sounding name comes with a couple of cool stories, one being it’s a riff on the word, ‘pickleboat’, where left over rowers who didn’t make the cut for official teams rowed together. Those leftover and often random rowers are representative of pickleball’s hodgepodge of ping pong, tennis and badminton. Alternatively, pickleball may have been named for its creator’s dog, Pickles, who loved to retrieve balls!

Pickleball is Shaking Up Sports Club Membership
With a different demographic, pickleball is setting sports club memberships alight! Social, with music pumping and the bar flowing, pickleball’s a party in activewear. And with this change in demographic, comes an increased membership stream.
In 2024, the Richmond Tennis Club of Nelson took the plunge and repurposed two tennis courts into pickleball courts. Today, the club has ten tennis courts and six pickleball courts, and a daily schedule packed for both sports.
